Workwise UK case study: Centrica plc

Category: I1 (Major Corporations)

Synopsis:

The Challenge: To implement a major property and culture change programme in main Centrica offices including HQ by closing one building, improving the utilisation of other buildings involving moving 3000 employees.  Additionally to improve retention and work life balance.

The Solution: Redesigning facilities to increase efficiency by using a team space approach to shared desks by encouraging more mobility across manager and staff grades as appropriate to the role.  Providing the technology and support to work wherever was appropriate - be it their own location, other Centrica offices or even at home.  Introducing an entire communication and training programme from Stakeholder briefings, Roadshows, Management Coaching and Teambuilding on best practice for managing and working in flexible teams.

The Results: Feedback from employees has told us they feel more trusted and more in control and have a significant improvement to their work life balance.  "We are definitely ahead of the game compared to other supposedly advanced organisations".
Flexible working has enabled us to reduce the need for new office space and relocation costs whilst attracting and retaining the best workforce.
